In an effort to improve his public image, twenty-seventh President William Howard Taft decided to heed Theodore Roosevelt's advice and have his picture taken on horseback. The publicity stunt backfired, however, when the horse collapsed under the 290-pound President. A search to find a stronger horse was soon abandoned when it began to generate too much negative press.
